About Me

About Me

Hi there! Welcome to my guitar page. My name is Marcelo Portaro. I was born and raised in Peru. I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old. It all started out of nowhere. Believe it or not, I was the kid who was always hiding from music class and avoiding playing any instrument. I was never inclined to music until one day, I saw a guitar laying on my dad’s bed and decided to give it a try. Something happened since that day.
I have not stopped playing guitar ever since. I studied music in Peru and in Barcelona, Spain at L’aula de Music. My music interests grew from rock to blues, funk, jazz, classical, pop and other genres. I have always found myself enjoying teaching and helping others to expand their knowledge in music. My goal is to inspire others to create music and develop a deeper passion for it.

The Expectations...

In music, and like anything else in life, comes a time where you can easily get stuck or overwhelmed by the amount of music and information that is out there. Have you gotten to a point where you felt you play the same thing over and over again when you improvise?

Everything you play sounds boring and you don’t know what to focus on next. I can help you guide you through those walls. Beware…once you tear down a wall a bigger wall will follow, but that’s the beauty of music. The more you know the less you feel you know. It humbles you.

The Learning Process

Also, if you are looking to have your kid learn guitar…let me tell you, it is a complete different journey and a huge commitment. As a parent you have to make sure you help your kid to stick to some sort of discipline. Maybe having a time of the day that is for guitar practice and that both of you are involved. A young kid (5-11yo) has great issues committing to something. Some don’t even know what music they like or who is the artist performing their favorite song. They just want to play. Some go through the first lessons and realize that it is not as easy as they thought and try to throw the towel within a week or two. I am here to help with that as well.
I am currently taking students that would truly want to develop music skills and have a passion for music. I have been teaching for almost 20 years now and if you love music, I promise you I will invest all my attention in you to get your talent to shine.
